So yeah it’s the Daylight Savings Poll today so go and vote yes. There’s really no logical reason to vote no.
Seriously, I’m fucking sick of all this slut-shaming and victim-shaming that’s surrounding this whole Matthew Johns shit. I really am. It’s driving me insane. I wouldn’t recommend reading the comments section on that link, it’s just too god damned depressing. It really gets me how difficult it must have been (and indeed is) for survivors in this country (and pretty much most countries) to even “come out”, that is, come forward and name, or even discuss this kind of thing publicly and people are saying she’s “just in it for the money.” What about all the other countless rape survivors who’ve also had similar expierences to “Clare” and don’t get the oppurtunity do publicly show up her offenders? Or the ones that try to? Are they just “just in it for the money” as well?
I damn well think not. I don’t think the vast majority of this pathetic rape apologist mentality that the public has developed (or probably always had) has any idea of the amount of money that goes into rehabilitation/healing/moving on/whatever word fits your situation. If you can afford it, and that’s a big if. I am very fuckin’ lucky because my family lives in relative comfort. Suicide attempts in W.A usually cost around $500 for just the ambulance. That’s alot of fucking money. Some of the medication I was on at one point could be up to $80 a perscription. Not to mention a lot of the questioning and ridiculous horse shit that’s even involved in trying to press charges. The other thing that fucking shits me to tears is how people have this fucked up “no charges laid, no crime ever too place” mentality. Far fuckin’ out brussel sprout. You’ve got to be kidding me right? Have these people honestly never heard the expression If You Don’t Get Caught It’s Not Illegal or something? And that’s exactly what these fuckers and what many others have done, they’ve not got caught so it apparently doesn’t matter.
But it really does. How would you feel knowing that someone who’d managed to make you feel so fucking shitty about your own existance could cross paths with you in the street, and probably smile to themselves and not give a shit when you’re choking to not puke/flip out/scream/have a panic attack/insert reaction here simply because you’ve seen them ? Now imagine if that was a person of influence – so like, a politician, a musician, an author or an athlete. You’d probably be seeing them a whole lot more than if they were just your average Joe Bloggs. See the connection? At all? Anyone? If you don’t well, I just feel damn fucking sorry for you, and probably a bit pissed of as well (or more than a bit really.)
I’d probably also like to add that:
Whatever happened in that room, whatever degrees of consent were given or not given, someone does not generally leave a normal, happy sexual experience with post-traumatic stress syndrome. That is the kind of psychological damage people sustain after enduring natural disasters or combat.
from here which does actually make a lot of sense if you have half a brain. Is it really that difficult for most of the population to see that?
I mean honestly,
someone please tell me if there is something i have missed here – the woman (NOT GIRL) was of both legal age of consent and of legal adult age, she was a WILLING PARTICIPANT, she didnt say no at all did she ? and …… well i don’t really think i need to say anything more. For christ sake, so for all these years, the femos who have been fighting so hard for womens liberation, the core of their claim has always been that they are simply fighting to give women the “right” of choice, ummmm, again someone please tell me if there is something i have missed but isnt that exactly what this woman did ?, didnt she CHOOSE to participate in this ? so what the hell is all the gigantic scandal about !?!?! (ill answer my own question there and ill put it as simply as i can – big scandal = parasites (aka media) = big ratings and newspapers sold = big money). YOU PARASITES (SORRY I MEAN MEDIA) NEVER CEASE TO AMAZE ME JUST HOW LOW YOU WILL SINK TO GET YOUR RATINGS, YOU PEOPLE REALLY HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO HESITATION WHATSOEVER ABOUT WHOS NAME YOU TOTALLY DESTROY JUST TO GET YOUR RATINGS DO YOU ?, YOURE SCUM !!!!!!! YOURE JUST LIKE LAWYERS, AT TIMES YOU ARE JUST AS BAD AS THE PEOPLE YOU REPRESENT ! If this had been the other way around would anyone be calling the man a “victim” ? NO – everyone would be calling him a bloody legend !! To all the people out there who, for whatever way their brain works, thinks that this woman has actually been victamised, all i am going to say is that stuff like this is exactly what is preventing society from ever acheiving true gender equality. It is just like all the people who hide behind their race when they are made to be accountable for their actions, they give all the genuine bigots out there their justification for thinking the way they do, same situation here, as long as certain women (and men who agree with their mentality) continue to scream about “having choice” ONLY when it suits them, then all the genuine misogynists out there will continue to have their justification for their beleifs. You people are your own worst enemy and before you go shedding tears – how do you know that this woman isnt just a gold digger ? why else would she wait seven years to finally scream that shes a victim ? THE ONLY ONE HE SHOULD HAVE TO ANSWER TO IS HIS WIFE !!!!! HE (OR THE REST OF THE PEOPLE INVOLVED) HAS NOT BROKEN ANY LAWS AND (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL) IT IS NONE OF ANYONE ELSES BLOODY BUSINESS !!!!!!!!!!, however there is one thing that would be VERY interesting to find out – how much money has secretly changed hands in all of this ?

Apart from the apalling lack of grammar, syntax and sentance structure this is just one of many comments like this on that pathetic excuse for journalism’s site PerthNow (which I think I link to way too often) which merely just further reiterates my point. There was one comment which kinda sorta not really spoke out for “Clare”,
I think everyone is missing the point. This is not about about whether the girl consented/was willing/was a ______(whatever). It’s about power. The power, either mental or physical that these men had over this young woman. They ARE public figures whether they like it or not, that’s why they get paid the big bucks. This puts them in a posistion of (mental) power. Rightly or wrongly, the girl sees them as something ‘better’ than her and by agreeing to have sex/be alone/have a drink she is seeking their approval. They, by virtue of their position of power, take advantage of this. A group of high profile grown men, fuelled by alcohol and camaraderie, against a 19 year old girl?? No matter what she said… anyone who says this is even close to acceptable needs to seriously look at their own moral compass. I don’t have much of an opinion of Matthew Johns, I don’t know enough about him to form a valid opinion… but at least he has had the guts to admit to his regrettable role in this whole sorry business. The other “boys” (they’re not men) are cowards… so much for their ‘mateship’.

Which you know, kind of does make a bit of sense. Until you get to the last sentance. And then I want to bang my head against my desk. Repeatedly. I’m not really going to post too many more of those comments cos I don’t think they’re particularly worth a further waste of time.
My point here is the amount of victim-bashing surrounding this particular incident (although, I’m sure I’ve seen others like it before) just fucking makes me sick. And reminds me (although not entirely) of my own expierences, although fortunatly I wasn’t in the public eye, but it damn well felt like it. It just feels like at times like this that the whole world is just fucking blind, bigotted and fucked up. Although, the logical and sensible (or maybe romantically optimistic) says this is not the case. Fuck Politeness also helps to summarise my feelings I find. Her sharing of her friends story is all to familiar. When I was younger (like year nine I believe, so I would have been 14) I had a friend who was a year older than me, making her 15, she had gone to a party, too much alcohol was involved and she awoke to a very unpleasant situation involving several more young men than her and no-one else around. I can’t remember the exact details because this was a while ago but I also knew that this had happened to her more than once. Doesn’t that say anything to anybody? That boys at that age are willing to do that? It just makes me much, too fuckin’ angry honey.
I’m just glad I didn’t actually have to read the West today because it probably would have given me a blood nose from rage.
This song is on repeat for me at the moment.

I also could not believe the level of bile directed at the victim in this case. Totally horrified me – especially some of the Facebook commentary. You may want to forget it all by now, but some of the more revolting things I found were in my post on it http://godardsletterboxes.wordpress.com/2009/05/18/old-cliches-new-applications/

It’s when things like this happen I realise that the only way peace on earth will ever happen is if the entire human species extincts itself overnight.
